What is Student Coaching?

Student coaching is about helping people to become better learners — not by teaching specific subjects, but by developing the skills, systems and mindset that make effective learning possible.

At Invicta, we provide students with advice, support and strategies to give all learners the ability to become a successful student.

Our sessions work with all students, regardless of their success, perceived ability or background. All students can make improvements to their learning.

What does an effective student look like?

The very best students have highly developed skills and habits in the following 5 areas. Our job at Invicta is to develop those areas to create life long learning.

Goal Setting

Successful students have a clear vision for their learning. They understand the purpose of their learning, and they have clear goals to achieve this.

We spend time helping learners to understand the purpose of their education, create a vision for their learning and set appropriate goals.

Hard Work

Effective learning cannot happen without, effort. This doesn’t mean working hard for as long as possible - this simply isn’t sustainable. Effort needs to be focused on Anders Ericsson’s principles of deliberate practice. This means, learners should repeatedly engage in highly focused, purposeful learning, that pushes themselves out of their comfort zone.

We provide strategies to build regular study habits so learners see the compounding benefits of their repeated efforts.

Organisation

The best students are the ones who can manage their work loads, prioritise their focus and keep their resources in order.

As you move through your educational journey, there will be times where the deadlines and assignments pile up. Effective learners have the systems in place to navigate the busy times.

Study Skills

How do we study and what techniques should we use? Great students spend their time using the most effective study methods. They’re able to use the most efficient study techniques to make the best use of their time.

Effective students are able to focus on improving their weak points, by using metacognition, they’re reflective and self aware. Great students are able to recognise good practice, and embed this into their own study.

We also work to help students build skills in retrieval practice, and spaced interleaved practice.

Attitude and Mindset

The best learners accept that you have to make mistakes in order to learn. Great students fully embrace the power of “yet” and Carol Dweck’s growth mindset.

We teach students to embrace feedback and use it as a tool to improve their skills. When things go wrong, or learners get stuck, they draw on their support networks to ask for help.

All of these tools helps to build grit and resilience to help learners deal with rollercoaster of education.

Coaching at Invicta

Every student is different.

Our coaching sessions are personalized to each learner’s goals, strengths, and needs. We begin by exploring how the student currently views their education and how they organize, plan, and study. This helps us identify areas to work on. Because everyone — no matter how successful — can learn to learn better.

Students are given practical activities and advice designed to build lasting skills and habits in organization, focus, and motivation. These activities keep progress moving and help students take ownership of their learning.

Follow-up sessions focus on what’s working, what needs adjustment, and how to handle new challenges as they arise during the school or academic year. Our goal is to support and strengthen the work already happening in the classroom — helping students approach school with more confidence, structure, and independence.

All sessions are held virtually and run for 50 minutes.
